. . .Thanks so much for trekking across the country to share some of your wisdom and energy and camp spirit with us. The involvement of your staff/former campers was truly a stroke of genius. I think that really helped bring home the idea that camp can impact children for a lifetime. Seeing those folks and hearing them rave about their experiences and their love for the kids and for camp was EXACTLY what we needed!!! That really got me thinking about my own experiences in camp too.

Children’s book tackles separation anxiety in dads facing military deployment

SAN DIEGO – Adult fiction has attacked with Don Quixote-esque determination the big windmill of men and their feelings, producing such cultural literary landmarks as Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus and He’s Just Not That Into You. But what makes Savvie Sunshine, Will You Remember Daddy When I am Out to Sea?: A Salute to All Navy Dads (published by AuthorHouse), a children’s book, so much more illuminating is that it doesn’t bog itself down with what is, but focuses on the what can be.

“This book is important because in our society, men are often socialized to hide their feelings or withdraw,” says the author, Dr. Chanda Nicole Holsey, founder of HALO for Families and wife of an enlisted Navy sailor. “However, that is very difficult to do when a man has to leave his young child whom he adores and is really just getting to know.”

In Savvie Sunshine, Will You Remember Daddy When I am Out to Sea?,readers met a wise little girl who helps relieve her father’s nervousness from having to depart from his family by detailing all the ways she and mommy will keep in touch. With vivid illustrations by Kelly Borrow, the book is entertaining, yet instructional.

While several books address how children can cope with a father’s extended absence during deployment, this is the only book I know of that helps both departing fathers and their young children maintain their close relationship with one another despite the separation.Sunshine, Will You Remember Daddy When I am Out to Sea? can help all family members face the separation with courage, hope and love.

-Dr. Marianne Celano, Adult and Child Psychologist

Depicting an African American family, Savvie Sunshine, Will You Remember Daddy When I am Out to Sea? is also significant as it portrays the often underrepresented ethnic minority that represents a large portion of military personnel.

In Savvie Sunshine, Will You Remember Daddy When I am Out to Sea?, Holsey has written a classic story of emotional wellness.

Dr. Chanda Nicole Holsey is the founder and visionary of HALO for Families. She brings over 15 years experience in public health program management. She has planned, implemented, and evaluated health promotion programs for the American Lung Association, Morehouse School of Medicine, Georgia Department of Community Health, and Hughes Spalding Children's Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. She earned a Master of Public Health in Behavioral Science and Health Education from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University and a Doctor of Public Health in Maternal and Child Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Additionally, she is a Certified Asthma Educator (AE-C).

Holsey is married to Petty Officer Eric Demond Holsey of the U.S. Navy, and is the mother of a beautiful daughter, Savannah Nicole. She has a passionate fervor for serving young children, the indigent and the underserved. Her personal motto is to "walk with wisdom". This is her first book.
